What professional formulation actually looks like

This is what it looks like when a formulator knows what they're doing.

There's a level of formulation where you stop following and start thinking.
Where the science sits in your head clearly enough that you can work from it, not just reference it. These are the things a formulator at that level can do.

Professional
Formulation
01
Read a formula and see how it works
Pick up any product, read the INCI list, and know what's doing the structural work, what's functional, and what's just there for the label. You're reading a formula the way a musician reads a score.
02
Design from scratch
Sit down with a blank page and build a formula from principles, because you know what makes a good product, understand how ingredients behave together and how to balance the system.
03
Diagnose what went wrong
When a batch fails, you don't throw it away. You look at it, think through what happened, and investigate. You have a system of steps you take to diagnose and correct issues.
04
Explain every decision
Why that emulsifier. Why that percentage. Why that preservative system at that particular pH. Why that process order. The reasoning is yours.
05
Answer without hesitating
When someone asks about your product, whether that's a customer, an assessor, or another formulator, you answer with confidence that comes from understanding your work.

You might have read that list and recognised where you want to be.
You might also have noticed the distance between that and where you are now.

INTRODUCING

THE PRO FORMULATOR PATH

A comprehensive formulation education built to close that distance:
10 modules covering every major product category, from aqueous systems and gels through to emulsions, surfactants, exfoliants, and stability.

Each module includes video lessons, downloadable notes, and/or formula guides that you keep permanently.
Taught by a qualified cosmetic chemist, supported by three AI tools I built for this programme, with 12 months of direct access to me.

How the programme teaches

A three-stage method designed for how formulators actually learn.

When you ask me a question about your formula, I'm not going to just give you the answer. Instead, I'm going to walk you through the thinking, because that's what actually stays with you.
If I tell you to change your emulsifier percentage, you've fixed one formula. If I show you how to work out why the percentage matters, you can fix every formula going forward.

That's the principle behind every module in the Pro Formulator Path. It's called the EFD method, and I built it because I kept seeing the same pattern: people skipping straight to making without building the thinking first. However you want to use these skills, personally, commercially or creatively, you have what you need to do it properly.

E
Stage One
Explore
Look at the landscape before you touch an ingredient or product. What exists, how is it built, and what does the science say? You build the mental map first.
F
Stage Two
Formulate
Now you formulate something, but every step comes with the reasoning behind it. You're building the product and the thinking at the same time.
D
Stage Three
Design
Take what you've learned and apply it. Write your own formulas, troubleshoot problems, make decisions from your own knowledge. This is where you stop following and start formulating.
This cycle repeats across every module, so by the end the thinking is second nature.
what you'll learn

10 modules plus a bonus. Science-led system with a focus on naturals throughout.

Each module follows the EFD method. You build the thinking before you build the product, and by the design stage you're making your own formulation decisions, not following mine.

01
Set the Stage
Ingredient categories, COSING navigation, GMP principles, equipment, the SCRUB method for preservative selection, pH fundamentals, and how to read and build a proper formula guide.
02
Aqueous Systems & Solubilisation
The science of water-based formulas. Solubilisation principles, toner development, solubiliser selection, and fragrance in aqueous systems without sacrificing clarity or stability.
03
Rheology & Gels
How products flow, feel, and behave on skin. Rheology modifiers, natural gums, Carbomer systems, and the formulation of face gels, eye gels, and cooling gels.
04
Surfactants & Cleansers
Building on Module 2, surfactant science properly explained. Active Surfactant Matter, ionic systems; micellar water, foam cleanser, and gel cleanser development.
05
Oil-in-Water Emulsions
Emulsion theory, hot process formulation, and the full texture range from lightweight lotions to rich creams to body butters. Cold process masterclass available as an optional add-on.
06
Water-in-Oil Emulsions
The reverse system- W/O theory, barrier cream development, and rich formulations that behave completely differently.
07
Exfoliants
Physical and chemical exfoliation. AHA and BHA chemistry, pH dependency and its direct effect on efficacy, regulatory usage limits, and the differences between leave-on and rinse-off formulations.
08
Skin Science
Skin structure, barrier function, and skin type physiology, applied directly to everything formulated in the previous modules. This reframes how you think about every product you make.
09
Stability Fundamentals
Basic stability assessment, and documentation. The essentials every formulator should know before putting a product in anyone's hands.
10
Legalities Overview
An honest orientation to the regulatory landscape. Safety assessments, CPSR, labelling requirements, and what you actually need to know.
Bonus
What's Next?
Three professional pathways explored so you can decide which path to follow with your new skill level and knowledge: starting a brand, working as a private formulator, and moving into manufacturing. Orientation session.
Included in your programme

Three smart tools built specifically for formulators.

These tools work alongside the curriculum. None of them exists anywhere else in this form.
They're built for the specific problems formulators face, and included in your programme for 12 months.

ELLIE, YOUR AI TUTOR

Trained in cosmetic formulation and available whenever you need her. Working through a module at 11 pm, and something doesn't connect? Ask Ellie. At your bench on a Saturday, and need a usage rate? Ask Ellie. You're never stuck waiting for a basic answer again.

FormuFix, Troubleshooter

Describe your problem (the separation, the graininess, the unexpected texture), and FormuFix, an app, helps you identify what actually went wrong and what to change. It helps you troubleshoot systematically, with the reasoning explained.

Smart Formulator Hub

Eight specialist AI assistants, each trained deeply in their own domain. Ingredient selection, formulation structure, active ingredients, regulatory questions.
You ask the right specialist for the right problem.

{All three tools are included for 12 months. After that, they're available as a paid subscription if you want to continue.}

You also get access to the private community, a space for serious formulators at the same stage of their learning.

BEFORE YOU JOIN

Is this the right programme for where you are?

This is for you if…
You've been formulating for a while and know the limits of recipe-following
You want to know the science behind what you make, not just the steps
You're ready to invest properly in building a real, lasting skill
You want access to a qualified teacher/ cosmetic chemist
You're looking for a programme that gives you reasoning, not just information

Common questions

Questions worth thinking through before you join

The programme starts with foundations. Module 01 covers everything you need before moving forward, and each module builds on the last. If you've been formulating at a DIY level, even casually, you have enough to begin. Ellie is there throughout for the moments when something doesn't click straight away. If you're completely new to making anything, a Spotlight Course would be a better starting point.

Absolutely. The skills you develop here, understanding ingredients, building formulas from principles, troubleshooting properly, are valuable regardless of what you do with them. The commercial modules (stability, legalities, what's next) are there for those who want them. You don't need commercial ambitions to benefit from knowing what you're doing.

Most formulation courses teach you to follow better, not to think differently. The EFD method is structured around building reasoning, not dependency. If you've finished a course and still felt stuck when you tried to create something original, that's exactly the gap this programme is designed to close.

That depends on your circumstances, and only you can answer it honestly. What I can say is that this is a 12-month programme with direct expert access (VIP), three proprietary tools, and a curriculum that doesn't exist elsewhere in this form. Compared to another year of failed batches, wasted ingredients, and knowledge that still doesn't connect, most students find it pays for itself quickly. But there's no pressure here. If the timing isn't right, it'll still be here when it is.

If you've been making products at home, even if it's just simple things like balms or scrubs, you have enough foundation. You don't need prior formal training. The programme builds from the ground up, and the AI tools are there whenever you need extra support. If you've never made anything at all, one of the Spotlight Courses would be a better place to start.

The programme is self-paced. You have 12 months to work through it, and lifetime content access once you complete it. There's no fixed schedule and nothing expires while you're enrolled. Formulate when your life allows. The structure is there for when you're ready for it.

READY TO START?

You already know if this is right for you

If you've read this far, you're probably not someone who needs convincing. You've been doing this long enough to know what's missing, and you've been looking for the right place to learn it properly. This is that place. I built it because it didn't exist, and I teach it because I genuinely think more formulators deserve access to proper science-led education without needing a chemistry degree to get through the door. If you've got questions before joining, ask me. I'd rather you felt sure than rushed. I shall see you on the other side.

"Formulation is a learnable skill. All of it. The emulsion theory, the preservation logic, the troubleshooting, the stability thinking,  none of it is beyond you. What's been missing is the right structure and a qualified teacher who explains the reasoning. The gap between where you are and where you want to be is real. But we close it here. That's the whole point."
